Free blog response. If none of the above choices speak to you, you may write about anything that you feel relates to something we have covered in class. It does not need to be directly related, but I have to be able to read the post and understand why you chose to write about it (i.e. Don’t write about the Steelers game that you watched yesterday).
What are some advantages and challenges of scientific collaborations? Have you directly experienced any of these in our collaborations with the students from the SuperLab at Duquesne? Can you think of another group of students or scientists that it might be beneficial for us to collaborate with in regards to our project? How would we help the collaborators and how would they help us? You don’t need to be specific in the names of the people. You can say “Someone that does or knows how to do X, Y, Z would help us because …”. What are some important things to consider when establishing collaborations?
The community problem that we are addressing in class relates to the microbiome of cats, but there is currently a world of research about the Human Microbiome taking place. What impact do you think the Human Microbiome Project will have on the future?
What do you think is the single most important discovery in the world of science and why? Try to clearly explain your reasoning and justify your ideas.
How does research (both bench-work and literature research) that you have done in this class compare to other research that you have done in classes – lab or otherwise? Based on your experience so far do you enjoy research? What aspects do you like and dislike?
What are your career goals (at this moment in time)? Did you choose to take the BioSOLVE course because of your career aspirations or for another reason? Has this course impacted your decision at all? Be honest. All opinions are valid. If you have learned that you are not cut out for research or just this particular research that is ok. If you found out that you love pipetting and running gels that’s great too! If BioSOLVE does not directly relate to your career goals do you think that the skills that you have learned and that you will learn in this class will still be beneficial to you in the future?
What impact did volunteering at the Homeless Cat Management Team (HCMT) Clinic have on you? Was it what you expected? Did you find the experience beneficial? Why or why not? Did the volunteer experience help you to make any connections to material we have talked about or you have read about in class?
Based on your knowledge of the Application-Based Service Learning (ABSL) pedagogy, what is another community problem that could be addressed through scientific research and service learning? How would research and service address the problem? Is this a feasible project for a class, why or why not?
